The prompt for this project was to develop a cube based on a specific design movement. The first step of the project was research, which culminated in a short research paper that would later be used on the cube. The subject I chose was Grunge, an art movement from the late 90s that emphasized rough textures and bold colors
So to start, I collected imagery and textures that would be useful for the final design of the cube. Also, I sketched a variation of the type that would possibly be used on the final cube. During this step, I also created a variety of scratch effects to go along with the other items I developed.
Another part of the image development was the creation of 3D assets using Blender. I had settled on candy being the ultimate theme of the cube, so I created several pieces of candy with different color variations in the 3D software Blender.
I moved away from my initial idea of using a custom type for the cube's title and instead used variations of Helvetica, printed them out, and roughed them up with an Exacto knife. I felt that this fit the cube a bit better and tied everything else together.
My first sample was a good way to see if the creative choices I made so far were working. It was the first time I saw everything I created at scale, and it gave me a good idea of some of the changes I'd need to make before the final due date.
